Dan died December 4, 2011 in Madisonville, Monroe Co., TN. OBIT: Hicks, Dan, Jr., of Madisonville, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2011, at East Tennessee Healthcare in Madisonville. Hicks was born October 23, 1921 to the late Dan Hicks, Sr. and Marion Louise Hicks. He was preceded in death by two brothers Reese Lynn Hicks and Eugene King Hicks. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Madisonville. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Betty Byrum Hicks and three children, Sandi Hicks Gray of Knoxville, Dan Hicks, III and wife, Angie Hicks of Crossville, and Amy Hicks Richardson and husband Lloyd Richardson of Knoxville. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Irene Greenwood Norman. His step-children are Sandy Byrum O'Neill and husband Mike O'Neill of Newark, DE, John Byrum of Madisonville, VA, David Byrum (deceased), Laura Byrum Johnson and husband Tim Johnson of Madisonville, and Shannon Byrum Sears and husband Frank Sears of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hicks, a local legend in the newspaper publishing business, owned and operated the Monroe County Democrat from 1967 until 1990. During his remarkable career, Hicks won several prestigious national awards including the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for Courage in Journalism and The Golden Quill Award for editorial excellence in 1969, and The John Peter Zenger Freedom of the Press Award in 1972. In addition, Hicks and his staff won dozens of First Place awards from the University of Tennessee State Press Association. During his career as a journalist, Hicks worked in various capacities for several newspapers in Knoxville, Clinton, Oak Ridge, and Virginia Beach, VA. Hicks was a 1949 graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Journalism, and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. Funeral 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, First United Methodist Church of Madisonville, Rev. Braxton Cotton officiating. Interment 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sunset Cemetery with military honors provided by V.F. W. Post 5156 and D.A.V. Chapter 93.

He married twice. He married Betty Byrum. He married Irene Greenwood.
