Ben died September 25, 2004 in Hannibal, Pike Co., MO. Obit: Ben J. Saxbury, 83, of Kinderhook, Ill., died at 5:54 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal. Elders Randy Garner and Ken Kaylor will officiate. Burial will be at Kinderhook Cemetery, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 222 of Barry, Ill.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the funeral home.
Mr. Saxbury was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Cincinnati Township in Pike County, Ill., to Ben W. and Alma Ruth Blacketter Saxbury.
He was married to Eva Delores Ryan on March 27, 1943, in Quincy, Ill. She preceded him in death April 30, 1994. He was later married to Bernice Morrow Grimsley on Sept. 27, 2003, in Kinderhook. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Carol Chaplin and husband, Bill, of Hannibal, Charis Strubinger and husband, Bob, of Kinderhook, and Dawn Landers of Council Bluffs, Iowa; four sons, Galen Saxbury and wife, Debbie, of New London, Kent J. Saxbury and wife, Dorene, of New Canton, Ill., William F. (Bill) Saxbury and wife, Beverly, of Versailles, Ill., and Jan Saxbury and wife, Brenda, of Clayton Ill.; three stepdaughters, Eileen Bernard and husband, Roger, and Dena Moyer, all of New Canton, and Sherril Turner and husband, Darrel, of Shelbyville; and two stepsons, William Ray Grimsley Jr. and wife, Christa, and Michael Grimsley, all of Kinderhook.
His survivors include 38 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth A. Colvin of Tucson, Ariz., M. Phyllis Shatzer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Bonita K. Saxbury of Hull; and two brothers, Richard M. Saxbury of Hull and Thomas W. Saxbury and wife, Karen Sue, of El Dara, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; one stepgrandson; and one stepgreat-grandson.
Mr. Saxbury retired in 1982 from Electric Wheel in Quincy, Ill. Following his retirement he was custodian for several years at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hannibal, where he was a member. He was a graduate of New Canton High School.
He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II and in Korea. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 222 in Barry, Ill. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, hunting and fishing with his sons and grandsons, and gardening.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Leapley, Curtis Saxbury, Randy Saxbury, William B. Saxbury, Shaun Saxbury, Ryan Strubinger and Austin Landers.
Honorary pallbearers will be John Leapley, Travis Leapley, Jason B. Leapley, Shane Saxbury, Gerard Saxbury, Justin Saxbury and Evan Strubinger.
He married twice. He married Eva Delores Ryan March 27, 1943 in Quincy, Adams Co., IL. Eva was born December 9, 1925 in Richfield Twp, Adams Co., IL. Eva was the daughter of Dennis Ryan and Eva Clothe Huffman. Eva died April 30, 1994 in Barry, Pike Co., IL. Eva was buried at Kinderhook, Pike Co., IL
