John died July 15, 2011 in Newport News, Independent Co., VA. OBIT: Dr. John Ira Weldon Jr., Ph.D., age 81, a native of Franklin County, N.C., and a Peninsula resident since 1955, died Friday July 15, 2011. Dr. Weldon received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Heed University, then an affiliate of the University of Miami; master's degree from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and bachelor's degree from Elon College, now Elon University. He also attended Duke University. He was a former member of Warwick United Church of Christ and Morrison United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher, Senior Visitation Team Member and Member of the Fellowship Club. He was a current member of First United Methodist Church, Hilton. Dr. Weldon served in the U.S. Army and the Reserve, attaining the rank of Captain. He retired in 1981, as Senior Education Advisor to the Army ROTC Program at Fort Monroe. He also taught at Townsville High School in Townsville, N.C., and at the College of William and Mary. He inspired the enactment of the initial Virginia Behavioral Science Law and for his efforts, was awarded license number one, the first Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia. Dr. Weldon was preceded in death by his first wife of 39 years, Cowles Spivey Weldon; and his parents, Zenobia T. and J. Ira Weldon. Survivors include his wife, Ethel Holt Loyd Weldon; daughter, Alicia Weldon Motley and husband, Douglas of Florida; son, John Ira Weldon III, and wife, Janice of Colorado; stepdaughter, Ethel Loyd Argus and husband, Lee of York County; stepson, the Rev. Harry R. Loyd Jr., and his wife, Janet of Mathews; sister, Dorothy Weldon Vinson and husband, William of Florida; 13 grandchildren, Eric and Sierra Motley, Elspeth Goodman and Emily Weldon, Christine Davis, Deanna Daniel, Donna Colburn, Brenda Richardson, John Thomas Loyd, Matthew, Mark, and Emily Hoffman and Kim Jachles; and 10 great-grandchildren, John, Willie, and Corey Daniel, Jenna and Ashleigh Jachles, Justin Kerr, Parker Richardson, Alex Goodman, Jaden Allen and Dyllan Davis. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Morrison United Methodist Church, Friday, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. John T. LeGault, Jr. officiating. Private interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

He married twice. He married Elizabeth Cowles Spivey. Elizabeth was born March 17, 1929 in Sunbury, Gates Co., NC. Elizabeth was the daughter of Maywood Lanier Spivey and Essie Elizabeth Doughtie. Elizabeth died January 10, 1989.
