OBIT:Services to celebrate the life of Doris Elizabeth Conly Gardner, 94, of Ringgold, LA will be held Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in Rockett Funeral Home Chapel in Ringgold, LA. Speakers helping celebrate her life will be Dr. A. W. Smart, family and friends. Interment will follow at Providence Cemetery in Ringgold, LA. Visitation will start Friday, August 25, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. at Rockett Funeral Home.
MaMa was born November 18, 1911 in Ringgold, LA to William Bert Conly and Willie Jane Davis Conly. She shed her earthly body on Thursday, August 24, 2006.
Miss Doris was an active member of First Baptist Church in Ringgold, LA for over 82 years where she served as Sunday School teacher, R. A. Leader and most recently as a member of Betty Lights' Faithful Workers' Class. She was a nurse for First Baptist Bible Memory Summer Camp.
She served as an election commissioner for Bienville Parish for 70 years. Miss Doris served on the Providence Cemetery Board for 75 years where she helped many families and had such a vast knowledge of the cemetery and her town.
MaMa's early school years were spent in the Springhill Community School where her mother taught. The Conlys later moved to Ringgold so their children could attend high school. Upon high school graduation, she attended LPN training at Schumpert Sanitarium. She served under Drs. V. Fletcher, Ward Hart, and W. K. Eichelberger.
In 1931 she married Roy Allums Gardner, son of Kade and Charlotte Allums Gardner. They had Bettye Dawn and Van Gardner. After Roy's untimely death in 1959, MaMa devoted her entire being to her family, her prized possessions.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Van Gardner, Sr.; grandson, Van Gardner, Jr.; great grandson, Billy Edwards; her siblings and their spouses, Ruel and Esther Conly, Etoyle and Shirley Conly, Theo and R. L. Rice, and Billie and Robert Radcliffe; nephews, Kenneth Conly, Tom Carson, and Flip Perry; niece, Janey Burkhalter Horton; sisters-in-law, Lottie Gray Gardner Burkhalter and Dudley Gardner Woods.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Bettye Dawn and Aaron Spainhour; daughter-in-law, Beverly Gardner; grandchildren, Cathy Spainhour Edwards, Debi Spainhour Hord, Elizabeth "Libby" Gardner, and George Cole Spainhour and his wife, Paula; grandsons-in-law, Ross Edwards, Tom Hord and Bill Brown; great grandchildren Brandee Barron and her husband, Gene, Roy Edwards, Nicole Elizabeth Hord, Rhett Gardner Edwards, Ashlee Hord, Riley Spainhour, Regan Edwards, Jason Edwards, and Johnny Edwards; great great grandchildren, Ashley Edwards, Dylan Edwards, Dallas Edwards, Malea Edwards, and Phoenix Barron; great great great granddaughter, Alayna.
Left to cherish Aunt Doris are nieces and nephews, Jo Ann Conly Carson, Stan and Susan Conly, William "Bill" and Louise Conly, Pat Conly, Phyliss and David Martin, Bill and Celia Rice, Carla and Walter Gates, Colleen and Roy Webb, E. R. Burkhalter, Texas Broadway and John Perry.
Pallbearers will be Steve Young, Tom Hord, Roy Edwards, Rhett Edwards, Jason Edwards, John Perry. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. E. R. Burkhalter, Ross Edwards, Roy Webb, Stan Conly, Bill Conly, Walter Gates, Bill Rice, David Martin, Bill Brown, Dr. Bill Mims, Buddy Wilson, John Richard Dalme, and Patrick Wetherington. She married Roy Allums Gardner 1931. Roy was born April 29, 1909 in Ringgold, Bienville Parish, LA. Roy was the son of Kader G. Gardner and Charlotte A. (____). Roy died June 24, 1959 in Ringgold, Bienville Parish, LA.
Doris Elizabeth Conly and Roy Allums Gardner had the following children:
