Dear Mother,
As you did not answer my last letter, I feel like something must have happened to you as you never failed to answer my letters before.
Well, I guess I will have to tell you what has happened to me. I have lost my darling wife. She died August 2nd.
She had been complaining for the last 6 months and alas confined to her bed two months. She gave birth to a fine boy July 4th. After the birth of the baby, she was better for a few days and then was taken bad again. The baby died August the 5th.
Lizzie did not say much about dying. The doctors would tell her that she would be alright in a few days. I had five doctors to tend her but they failed to do any good.
My three little girls is in the orphans home. They will go to school tomorrow. The school will last ten months. I went to see them yesterday. They are very smart little girls. My little boy is in the hospital. I do not believe that he will ever get well.
As for myself, I am living all alone. I do not know the whereabouts of any of Lizzie's folks. If you know please let me know so I can write to them.
Mother, I hope you will not be offended at me for letting my children go to the home. I think if you was here and see how they was treated there, you would say that was the best thing I ever did for them. They get 10 months school in every year and can stay there till they are 18 if I want them to.
Mother, if you answer this letter, I will try to tell you something about how I am getting along.

General Notes: From a newspaper clipping found in a family bible:
Mrs. W. H. Craig Dies at Taylorville
Mrs. W. H. Craig, well know and highly esteemed resident of this place
for many years, died suddenly in Taylorville Thursday morning
following a stroke of apoplexy while on her way from the B. and O.
passenger station to the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Watts.
Mrs. Craig had just arrived in Taylorville just a few minutes before
and was met at the depot by her son-in-law, W. H. Watts, at whose home
she had planned to spend the day, when a short distance from the
station, she complained of her head and leaning on Mr. Watts' arm
began to sink away. She was taken to the nearest house where a
physician was called, but it was too late to be of any assistance,
Mrs. Craig passed away about a half hour later.
Undertaker C. A. R. Snyder was summoned to care for the body and upon
notifying the corner of the sudden death, the body was removed to the
house.
Ellen Rebecca Wood, daughter of Brewer A. and Rebecca Wood was born in
Scott County, Illinois, July 22, 1848.
During her youth, she with her parents moved to a farm near Moweaqua,
where she lived until her marriage to William H. Craig October 8,
1873, when they moved to a farm near Taylorville where they remained
four years. Later they moved to Edinburg where they resided for the
last 42 years.
She is survived by her husband and five children, Mrs. W. H. Watts of
Taylorville, Mrs. E. W. Weaver of Chicago, Gertrude of Springfield,
Mrs. J. F. Buckles of Morrisonville and Charles William of Montana.
Two sons preceded her in death, one in infancy and the other in young
manhood.
Mrs. Craig was a member of the Methodist church. She was a woman of
lovely character and her death is a great bereavement to family and
friends.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 10 0'clock Saturday
morning, Rev. D. F. nelson, the pastor, officiating. Burial was made
in the Edinburg cemetery.
Ellen married William H. Craig. William died in Taylorville, Christian, Illinois, United States.
