Grandpa Henry was a teacher and they lived in a little house and
papered it with newspapers. Sitting around there, Grandpa noticed
crossword puzzles on the wall and cut if off the wall to work it. Not
long he had cutouts all over the walls. He was a teacher at Pine
Knot, Finch, and Clark's Chapel, where in one picture, there are three
doctors Grandpa taught. About 1908, Grandpa had an abscessed tooth
that got infected and set up blood poison. Grandma brought him home
in a wagon to die after five doctors had said he would die. Mr. Ed
Bolin and Pet McNeal came and prayed over Grandpa and put oil on him.
I don't know what kind. He was bedfast for thirteen weeks but got
well. He out-lived those five doctors. He was baptized at Liberty
July 12, 1902."

Visitation will be held today, January 25, 2008 from 5 p.m. until 8
p.m. at McClain-Hays Funeral Home.
Mrs. Flint was born December 19, 1907 and died January 23, 2008 at age
100 years and 35 days in the Neshoba County General Hospital.
She was a native of Winston County, but had lived in Neshoba County
since 1932. She was a member of First Baptist Church, a charter member
and first secretary of the local chapter of AARP, charter member of
the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council, inactive member of the
Retired Teachers Association and former member of the Board of the
East Central Mississippi Community Action Agency, Inc. She was a
25-year employee of Wells-Lamont Glove Factory, having been one of its
first few employees in 1945. She was a former school teacher,
assistant manager of the Senior Citizens Center, and greeter at the
old Wal-Mart store.
Mrs. Flint was preceded in death by husbands, Ollie M Wood in 1942 and
James Terrell Flint in 1971 and granddaughter, Donna Sue Marcase in
1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents, E.G. and Lee
Augusta Smith, sisters, Erie Johnson and Willie Bennett Ingram, and
brother, Terrell Smith.
She is survived by daughters, Ollie Fay Flint, Philadelphia and
Shalimar, FL; Sonya Elinor Marcase and husband, Dr. Donald E Marcase,
Pineville, LA; Patricia Orr and husband, Dr. H Bernie Orr, Mobile, AL;
sons, Wayne Wood and wife, Yole, Lakewood, WA; Smith Eckle Wood and
wife, Janet, Eufaula, AL; sister, Farris Kemp, Pelahatchie, MS; eight
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and
nephews. Her niece, Zane Wood Black assisted her children with her
care for over three years of her stay in the Neshoba County Nursing
Home, where she had been a resident since 2001.

General Notes: Aunt Gertrude, as we called her, was really my great aunt. She had
quite a history. Aunt Gertrude was a graduate nurse and joined the
British Navy during WWI before the U.S. was in to the war. While
aboard a ship, a German submarine torpedoed her ship and she ended up
in a lifeboat. She returned to the U.S. and by that time, joined the
U.S. Navy. Later, she had a job with the U.S. Health Department and
rode a mule in the hills of KY and TN, tending to people with various
illnesses including TB. During WWII she was too old see active duty so
she trained nurses for the Armed Services. Gertrude had full veteran
benefits and in her later years she was treated at the military
hospital in Augusta, GA. She had a full military funeral and was
buried in Oakridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL, the same Cemetery
where Abraham Lincoln is buried.

Here Since 1926 Dies
Mrs. Bertha B. Buckles, 67, of 2045 E. Roosevelt Ave, died at 4:04
p.m. yesterday enroute by ambulance to Decatur and Macon County
Hospital. For the last few years Mrs. Buckles had lived with Mrs. L.
Leimbach, of 1712 N. Union St. as a companion. Her son, Bob O. Buckles
lives at the Roosevelt Avenue address. She was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church, Owen Scott Chapter of the Eastren Star and Royal
Neighbors. Born in Edinburg on November 26, 1885 she was the daughter
of the late Will and Ellen Wood Craig. She married Jacob F. Buckles in
Edinburg in 1904. The couple moved to Albion and came to Decatur in
1926. He died Sept. 18, 1940. Mrs Buckles leaves five sons, Lewis B.,
Washington, IL; Bob O., Decatur; Dean F., Milwaukee, Wisc; Donald C.
and Frank E. Buckles, both of San Diego, Calif. Suviving also are two
sisters, Mrs. Della Weaver, Los Angeles, Calif. amd Mrs. Gertrude
Griffith, Augusta, GA, Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dawson& Wikoff
Chapel. friends may call after 5 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in
Washington, IL Cemetery.
