He would make my dad and Uncle Gene so mad because he would whistle getting ready to go to the field. He loved to work. Uncle Bill once said that Grandpa did more work than any two men he ever knew. One time when I was little, Grandpa was cutting hay where Harlon lives and there were rabbits running everywhere. He told us to try and catch them. He hollered, "Here's one, here's one!" and it was a big ole rat which bit down on my hand, and I slung it and slung it trying to get it off. Finally, it flew off. Grandpa said, "Come here boy". He stuck my finger down in the gas tank on the tractor, and said, "You're alright." Grandpa told Uncle Bill to a circus or carnival where this guy had a monkey. Uncle Bill threw a clod and hit the monkey and the guy pulled his hair. Grandpa turned the guy around and said if you want to pull someone's hair, pull mine. Grandpa was sixteen, Uncle Bill was six. I never will forget when we were just kids, Grandpa would let us ride in the cotton wagon over to Walcott. He would buy us a soda and candy bar while we waited on the cotton to be ginned. We would ride the rough riding wagon back and it would be after dark when we got home but it would be worth it for that soda and candy bar."

Fayetteville Jewell Wynne, 86, of Fayetteville died Feb. 8, 2000 at Fayetteville City Hospital. she was born Feb. 18, 1913, in Philadelphia, Miss to Floyd S. and Emma G. Alderman Wood. She was a retired registered nurse and a former stewardess with American Airlines.
She attended Loungeville Congregational Church in LaGrange, ILL. She also lived in Eureka Springs before coming to Fayetteville in 1984. She was proceeded in death by her husband Andrew Monroe Wynne on Oct. 29, 1984.
Survivors include her two daughters Patricia Jewell Wynne of New York City, NY, and Mary Martha Wynne of Fayetteville. Cremation were made by Monroe's Chapel of Fayetteville. A memorial service will be held later in Chicago.

The call to the Democrat in April 2011 was from an ESPN producer trying to confirm Rachel Evans' report in her Just Among Friends society column two days earlier that Peyton Manning's wife Ashley had given birth to twins.
"Exciting news from the NFL, times two! Peyton and Ashley Manning are the parents of twins, Marshall Williams Manning and Mosley Thompson Manning, a little football player and a cheerleader, born March 3l, 20ll, in Indianapolis, Ind.," she had written. "They are being welcomed by their cousin, Ava Frances Manning, born March 2l, 20ll, to Eli and Abby Manning."
ESPN wanted to know the source since there had been rumors but no confirmation from the predictably private Manning family. So the media were chomping at the bit.
Several newspapers, radio and television stations ended up calling or emailing the Democrat to verify that the report was factual and not an April Fools joke.
Never doubting Rachel's reporting she took so seriously, I told this somewhat skeptical producer I trusted the reporter but would find out. I was more worried about Rachel being offended that I was asking.
My call caught her on the golf course and, sure enough, in a voice of some disdain, she exclaimed: "Olivia! of course."
Good enough, I thought, and sheepishly explained why I was asking.
ESPN accepted that authority, and her account of the Manning twins went viral. It was a big deal. That was Rachel: Big in life and traditions like the Fair, in her family and among friends.
She loved the Fair! Oh, did she love the Fair. For years, Sunset Strip put on their own beauty pageant she organized. She loved parties and festivities.
Few leave as big a mark on the social fabric of their community as Rachel Darby Evans left on Philadelphia and Neshoba County.
Rachel went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 11 and most of us are certain a large homecoming celebration that involved cornbread, peas and multiple casseroles ensued with some piano playing and hymn singing.
For decades, I was a Thursday noon Fair lunch guest. And when I bought the Democrat, she marveled when duty called for me to go cover the politicos. I'd make governors wait, as Rachel told it.
Truth be known, Rachel was my VIP. Our porch swing time after lunch became more precious with the years.
We especially enjoyed those years when her Fair neighbor and our friend Flynn Dobbs was alive. Eternity will be full of afternoons like that on Rachel's porch with Flynn.
After she retired from preparing the big Thursday Fair lunches, Rachel had me to her home a few years ago for lunch. She prayed a beautiful blessing about friendship and Heaven and all of our friends and loved ones like Flynn whose souls are resting with Jesus awaiting with absolute certainty the Resurrection.
Rachel loved the Democrat, and she loved writing her column because she loved people and the thrill of storytelling.
She wrote for two of my predecessors, Jack Tannehill and Stanley Dearman, in a journalistic career that spanned off and on more than five decades. She would often say that people come and go, but everyone always remembers who the Democrat editors are. Not so much these days.
But the Fair! Rachel loved the Fair. It was for Rachel, like many of us, her "happy place." That soul-enriching energy came through in her column about a cooler theft the last night one year.
"And on a sad note, someone mistakenly took a white Yeti cooler with the fish logo on top from our back porch at Cabin #244 on Sunset Strip the last night of the Fair," she wrote. "It belonged to one of our guests and we'd like to get it back for him. Please call me at 601-656-3773 and we'll arrange a 'drop-off' location. We thank you. The Fair should never end on a sad note."
Rachel and I go way back to when I was 10 and putting out a newspaper on my dad's thermal copier one sheet at a time. Rachel had stopped to help a hurt dog on Highway 19, was bitten and that would become the first news story I'd ever write \emdash and Rachel became my first subscriber outside of the family. And she stuck with me until the end.
Rachel loved pipe organs and recalled the M.P. Moller being installed in the old Methodist church downtown where The Citizens Bank is today in 1942 when she was seven years old.
We shared the love of the Sing at the Fair too.
Contemplating the glory of the roar of the pipes in Heaven that her soul is experiencing is real and comforting in the Faith she cherished through Christ our Savior.
Not so many people are buried out of the churches these days, but Rachel was to the Glory of God in the properness of the polite society she represented and documented within these pages.
"She was a true Southern lady to the end," one mourner wrote on social media.
Daughter-in-law Mitze Evans recalled her dedication to family. "If one of the kids woke up with a fever, she would be there by 7 or 8 so we could go to work, and she'd have supper ready by the time we got home," she said.
Rachel's attention to detail was impeccable. She came in early from the 2012 Fair to meet her deadline and reported that next week in the Democrat: "Jean Myer, former resident of Philadelphia, who now lives on Lake Martin in Alabama, arrived at the Fair on Saturday as the guest of Sarah McKay. She also departed the Fair on Saturday, with a two-week span between the Saturdays! Jean's family, Perry, Jean, Pete and Andy Myer, came for a visit over Fair weekend.
"Frances Molpus and her daughter, Nancy Molpus Pace of Greenville, South Carolina, entertained a group of Frances' bridge friends at a luncheon in Cabin 4 on the Square on Wednesday before the Fair. As a special treat, Frances' daughter and granddaughter, Melanie and Kathleen Myers, arrived for the Fair from Dallas in time to join the party for lunch. The Meridian Star captured the party in a front-page picture of the bridge players, who included Frances and her guests, Carol Oliphant, Sarah McKay, Jean Myer, Rachel Evans, Shirley Cox, Joyce Hardy, Marianne Enochs, Alyce Belenchia, Evelyn Perry, Billie Latting, and Nancy Yates."

CILCO Foremam Dies Early Monday Morning
Funeral services were held yesterday at 2 p.m., October 5, at the
Habecker funeral home for Lewis Buckles, 48, 112 South Wood street.
City Alderman from the Fourth ward, and foreman for Central Illinois
light company here, who died at 1 p.m. Monday of the week, October 3,
at the Proctor hospital, Peoria, where he was taken Sunday evening in
the Habecker ambulance. An employee of the Central Illinois Light
company, he was on a 30 day leave of absence and had been ill for
several months. Re. J. Wayne Staley, pastor of Washington Christian
church, officiated. Interment was in Glen Dale Cemetery here. Casket
bearers were employees of the Central Illinois Light company, Clair
Crabill, 119 Lynn street, manager; John Rosenberg, RR 1 Washington;
Guido Tiezzi, 407 West Jefferson street; Ralph Speerly, Morton; Gordon
Haley, 903 East Holland street; and Merle Reed, 801 East Holland
street. Mrs. W. G. Himmel, 502 West Jefferson street, was organist.
City officials and employee of the local Central Illinois Light
company attended the services in a body. Mr. Buckles was born October
24, 1906 in Edinberg, Ill., the son of Jacob F. and Bertha Craig
Buckles. He was married to Wilma Berry, May 5, 1926 at Carmi. He had
resided in Washington for 27 years and was a member of the Taylor
Lodge No. 98 AF and AM. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs.
Marilou Balogh of Chicago; four brothers, Craig and Frank of San
Diego, Calif., Bob of Decatur and Dean, stationed in Detroit, Mich,
with the U. S. Navy.
Lewis married Wilma Berry. Wilma was born on 30 Oct 1908 and died in Mar 1987 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States, at age 78.

Staley Supervisor "Bob Buckles, Ex- Civil Service Official, Dies"
Bob O. Buckles Sr., 55, of 2045 E. Roosevelt Ave., an original member
of the Civil Service Commission and a supervisor at the A.E. Staley
Mfg. Co., died at 2:15 p.m. yesterday in St. Mary's Hospital of an
apparent heart attack.
Mr. Buckles was named one of three commission members by former Mayor
Robert A. Grohne when it was established in 1959. He served on the
commission for four years and was chairman for part of that period.
He was an employee of the A.E. Staley Mfg., Co. for more than 30
years, and was named supervisor in 1960. Mr. Buckles was past
president of the Staley Fellowship Club, past commodore of the Stephen
Decatur Yacht Club, past Master of the Great Light 1064 AF and AM and
a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Swords of Bunker Hill.
He was well known in Decatur for his competitive sailing achievements
and held numerous trophies, won in local and Midwest competition.
Mr. Buckles had been a resident of Decatur for the past 37 years,
coming here from Albion. He was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Edinburg, the
son of Jacob and Bertha Bell Craig Buckles.
Mr. Buckles married Natalie Ricci in Decatur on April 20, 1929. He is
survived by his wife; two sons, Bob O. Jr., and Bill L., both of
Decatur: three brothers, Dean F. and D. Craig, both of Las Vegas,
Nev.; Frank E., San Diego, Calif., and two grand children.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Dawson and Wikoff Funeral
Home, where friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at
Fairlawn Mausoleum.
Bob married Natalie Ricci, daughter of Amilcare Ricci and Julia Maria Gambaliant. Natalie was born on 23 Dec 1910 in Fanano, Italy.
General Notes: Natalie was actually born in Fanano, Italy, in the Province of Modena,
Italy. She arrived with her mother, Marie, to Ellis Island on
6/1/1912. Natalie was the daughter of Amilcare Ricci and Julia Maria
Gambaliant.

Memorial Services for Frank E. Buckles, 59, of Point Loma, will be at
11 a.m. tomorrow in Beardsley-Mitchell Mortuary. Private interment
will be in Rosecrans National Cemetery. He died Sunday in a hospital.
Mr. Buckles was born in Browns, Edwards County, IL, and lived in the
county 33 years and was a general Dynamics estimator before retiring
in 1982. He was a graduate of Millikin Unversity in Illinois and a
16-year member of the Southwestern Yacht Club. Survivors include his
wife, Margaret and a brother, Craig, of Las Vegas.
Frank married Margaret Alma Welfl. Margaret was born on 15 Feb 1915 in Bon Homme, SD and died on 6 Feb 1993 in Scottsdale, Maricopa, Arizona, United States, at age 77.
