Friday, November 19,1999 at Phenix Regional Hospital.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Newsome Cemetery, with Rev. Bud Swindall officating, according to Strifflerp-Hamby
Mortuary, Phenix City. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Newsome was born January 5, 1907 in Phenix City, the son of the late Sarah Parsons Newsome and John Francis Newsome. He was a retired
carpenter, and a member of Bethany Congregational Church.
Survivors include his son, Roland Newsome, Jr., of Phenix City; four daughters, Frances Herring of Smith, Al, Shirley Newsome Newsome of
Phenix City, Eula Fay Rumsey of Smiths, Al and Sue Gilbert of Salem, Al; two sisters, Ira Belle Tew and Beth Hand, both of Smiths, Al;
three brothers, James B. Newsome, Harry Newsome and Rufus Newsome, all of Phenix City; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two
great great grandchildren.
Roland was buried in the Newsome Cemetery, Phenix City, AL
He married Odessa Lou Brazeal December 24, 1927 in Lee Co., AL. Roland and Odessa were married in
the Trinity Methodists Parsonage, in Lee Co., AL
Odessa was born December 15, 1909. Odessa died September 27, 1986 in Phenix City, Russell Co., AL. Odessa is buried at
the Newsome Cemetery, Phenix City, AL

Shirley Ann Newsome was born August 21, 1933. Shirley died January 14, 2014 in Phenix City, Russell Co.,
AL.
OBIT: Shirley A. Newsome, 80 of Phenix City, Alabama, left this world to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at St.
Francis Hospital. She was born August 21, 1933, the daughter of the late Roland Newsome and Odessa Brazeal Newsome. She was a lifelong
resident of Phenix City, Alabama. She resided in the family home place built by her father. Shirley took great pride in decorating the home
while keeping the special touches originally designed by her father. She was a long time member of Golden Acres Baptist Church. Shirley had
and unwavering faith in God and for many years taught the Kindergarten Sunday School Class. Through God she assisted in shaping the
christian foundation of numerous children. She was employed with Fieldcrest Mills from the age of 18 until her retirement. Shirley was an
expert at baking. She will always be remembered for her famous Blueberry Torte. She was predeceased by her loving parents aand brother
Roland Newsome, Jr. She is survived by her sisters, Frances Herring, Eula Fay Rumsey (Yogi) and Sue Gilbert (Jack). She is also survived and
loved by numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside funeral siervices will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday January 17, 2014 at Newsome Cemetery with
Rev. Toby Newsome officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby, Phenix City, AL. Visitation will be held from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm Friday at
the funeral home prior to the service. Shirley was a loving sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by all.Read more here:
