Harold died January 23, 2005 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. OBIT: Dr. Harold S. Songer, 77, of Louisville, Ky., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Jefferson Manor.
He was a native of Miami, Fla., a World War II Coast Guard Veteran, a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, and the son of the late Dorris and Ernest Songer. Dr. Songer was pastor at Cove Creek Baptist Church for five years.
Dr. Songer received a bachelors degree from the Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he was a senior professor of New Testament Interpretation and vice president of Academic Affairs. He was chairperson and member of evaluation teams for accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.
In 1971 he was listed as an Outstanding Educator of America and wrote the Commentary on James in the Broadman Bible Commentary and many articles for professional journals.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Rains Songer; a son, Christopher Songer; and a sister, Irene Laffe of Jacksonville, Fla.
Services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Pearson’s Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, Ky.
Memorial gifts may be sent to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Pearson’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He married Florence Rains July 31, 1948. Florence was born August 31, 1929. Florence died January 9, 2014 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.
