Mr. Holmes loved the outdoors, RVing, camping, fishing, telling stories, reminiscing about his early years in the Midwest, taking care of Helen, and continually keeping busy. He was always seen wearing his trademark bola, or cord, ties. Mr. Holmes is survived by his bride of 66 years, Helen Holmes of Gresham, Ore., son Vern Holmes of Gresham, and three grandchildren: Terry Holmes, Carol Holmes and Christopher Holmes, all living in the Portland area. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: David Conroy and Matthew Conroy, Wyoming and Douglas Woods and Faith Woods of Beaverton, Ore., and numerous great-great-grandchildren. OBIT: Helen Holmes Helen Holmes died at the age of 84 on March 31, 2003, at Hopewell Hospice Center, Portland, Ore. Helen Lee (Slocum) Holmes was born in Gerster, Mo., on March 4, 1919, to Edward and Mollie Slocum. Helen was the youngest of 10 children. On Feb. 28, 1936, she married Carl William Holmes. They had one child and lived in Missouri until 1951 when they moved to Bingen, Wash., and then later to Hood River. Helen worked as a cook at Larsens Lunch in White Salmon. Later she worked several years as a meat wrapper at Town and Country (now Thriftway) supermarket, also in White Salmon. Helen retired from work in 1974. In 1976 she and Carl sold their home, bought an RV and hit the road. She thoroughly enjoyed her golden years traveling with Carl. Their RV was their home for a quarter of a century. Helen’s pastimes were going to the beach, fishing, clam-digging and camping. A great deal of her time was spent with her grandchildren. They truly were “spoiled by Grandma.” Helen leaves behind her son, Vernon Holmes; grandchildren Terry, of Portland, Ore., Carol of Beaverton, Ore., and Christopher of Vancouver, Wash.; great-grandchildren Doug and Faith Woods of Beaverton and one great-great-grandchild, Keegan Woods, of Beaverton. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her nine older brothers and sisters, her other “sister,” Dora Foster-Slocum who passed away two weeks before, and her husband of 66 years, Carl.
