He married Clara Isabell Midgett July 1964. Clara was born March 16, 1909 in Quaker, MO. Clara was the daughter of Jacob Albert Midgett and Nancy Elizabeth Keith. Clara died April 12, 1978 in Farmington, St Francois Co, MO. OBIT: Clara Isabell Phelps of Rt.. 1, Belgrade, was born March 18, 1909 at Quaker, Mo., a daughter of the late Jacob and Nancy Keith Midgett. She passed away April 12, 1978 in Farmington Community Hospital at the age of 69 years and 27 days. She was united in marriage to Thomas Wilson in April 1927 and three children were born to this union. Mr. Wilson preceded he in death and she was later united in marriage to Herbert Phelps in July 1964. Besides her parents an first husband, she was preceded in death by one infant daughter; one sister, Blanche Johnson' one brother Clifford Midgett and one half brother, Elmer Keith. Those who remain to mourn her passing from this life are: her loving and devoted husband, Herbert Phelps of Rt. 1, Belgrade; two daughters, Bulah (Mrs Johnie Hampton) of Elvins and eula ( Mrs Johnie Abney) of st Louis; two brothes, Lucian Midgett of Caledonia and Lewis Midgett of Glen Carbon, IL.; one sister, Grace Johnson of Elvins; one stepdaughter, Bernel (Mrs John Dennis) of Belgrade; two step sons, Glenwood (Pete) Phelps of Hillsboro and Dwayne P:helps of Bourbon; 18 grandchldren, 9 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and a hot of friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 pm Saturday, April 15 at the Hazel Creek Church of God with Rev. Gay Gillian officiating. Interment was in Antioch Cemetery under the direction of the Britton Bros. (Sparks) Funeral Home of Potosi.
