Born July 26, 1918, in Rowan County, Mr. Saunders was a son of the late Jesse L. Saunders and Cora Allgood Saunders Nance. He was educated in the Rowan County schools; attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and graduated from John Marshall Law School, Atlanta, Ga.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in England during World War II as a comptroller.
He worked in real estate development and construction of nursing care facilities and practiced law in Georgia. He was a member of Salisbury Moose Lodge 2019, Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576, Oasis Shriners, Rowan Shrine Club, Salisbury Elks 699, North Carolina Real Estate Commission, State Bar Association of Georgia and North Carolina Association of Long-Term Care Facilities.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Spencer.
A son, Robert Lee Saunders, died Nov. 8, 1999.
Survivors include wife Annie Maie Chandler Saunders, whom he married April 5, 1941; son Spencer William Saunders Jr., Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Franklin B. Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church, Spencer.
